I started life in the design world working on the old drawing board as a paste up artist before the apple mac became widely used in the studios. In 1991 we were given training on the apple macs and with the variety of design packages and upgrades I have been learning ever since.

I had a long successful career with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council designing a wide variety of work. I regularly produced the authority's newsletter open door, the council tax leaflets and the multi-page statement of accounts annual report, as well as a high volume of design for other directorates across the authority.

An important part of the job in any design role is adhering to the corporate identity guidelines. Working for a multi-million pound organisation such as BMBC means the logo has to be consistent. I also advised, provided corporate identity guidelines and supplied a range of digital logos to officers, external businesses and agencies.

Branding behind the butterfly

The idea behind the butterfly wasn't just a pretty image, I chose it for a number of reasons.

I have worked with Barnsley Council for such a long time it's like leaving my family but they are also exciting times, a chance to change and show I can be something different.

The red admiral butterfly is known as Vanessa atalanta, Vanessa being my first name. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.

If my explanation isn't enough, here are a couple of statements that clinched it for me:

'Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over,
it became a butterfly'.

'Perhaps the butterfly is proof that you can go through a great deal of darkness yet become something beautiful'.
